I’ll be honest — the first time I bought a digital download, I stared at the file on my computer for a solid ten minutes wondering if I was going to mess it up. What if the colors came out wrong? What if the printer cut something off? What if I wasted paper and it just looked bad?
It did not look bad. It looked wonderful. And I’ve been printing digital art at home ever since.
If you’ve been eyeing a printable but feeling a little uncertain about the whole process, this is for you. You do not need a fancy printer, special software, or any design knowledge whatsoever. I’m walking you through exactly how I do it — from download to frame — so your first print turns out just as beautiful as it looked on the screen.
Step 1: Download Your File
After you complete your purchase at Primitive Printables, your file will be waiting for you in two places: the success page that appears right after checkout, and your personal library at primitiveprintables.madethis.app/library. You can return to your library anytime — your downloads don’t expire.
The file will typically be a high-resolution PDF or PNG at 300 DPI or higher. That “300 DPI” detail is what makes it print-ready — it means the image has enough information to look sharp and crisp at full size, not blurry or pixelated the way a screenshot from a website might look. Download the file and save it somewhere easy to find, like your desktop or a Downloads folder.
Step 2: Choose Your Paper
This is where you can really make a difference in how the finished print looks, and it doesn’t have to cost much at all.
Regular copy paper works fine for a test run — I always print a draft first to check placement and color before moving on to nicer paper. But for a print you’re going to frame and hang, I’d recommend one of these options instead.
Card stock (65–110 lb) is my personal go-to for how to print printable wall art. It’s thicker than regular paper, so colors look richer and the finished piece feels solid and intentional. A ream of white cardstock costs just a few dollars and most home printers handle it without any fuss.
Matte photo paper is another wonderful choice. It gives a soft, slightly velvety finish that suits farmhouse-style artwork beautifully — colors pop without any shine or glare.
One thing to avoid: glossy photo paper. Glossy gives prints a commercial, mass-produced feel — which is the opposite of the warm, handmade look we’re going for with primitive americana art. Stick with matte.
Step 3: Get Your Print Settings Right
This is the step where most first-timers run into trouble, so pay close attention here.
When your print dialog opens, find the size or scaling option and set it to “Actual Size” or 100%. Do not use “Fit to Page” — that setting quietly shrinks your image to fit inside the printer’s margins, and you’ll end up with a smaller print than you intended, surrounded by unnecessary white space.
Set your quality to “Best” or “Photo” mode. The default “Normal” setting uses less ink and the results will look softer and less vivid than the file deserves.
If you’re printing a PDF (and most Primitive Printables files are PDFs), I strongly recommend using Adobe Acrobat Reader rather than your browser’s built-in viewer. It’s free to download and gives you much better control over print settings. Open your file in Acrobat, choose Print, set the size to “Actual Size,” select your quality, and you’re ready to go.
Step 4: Frame It
Here’s one of the things I love most about printables: they’re designed to fit standard frame sizes, so there’s no custom framing required. The most common sizes you’ll find in our shop are 5×7, 8×10, and 11×14. All three are easy to find at IKEA, Walmart, Target, and Amazon — usually for just a few dollars.
For farmhouse-style art, I love a simple black metal frame or a weathered wood frame. Both let the print do the talking. If you want a more polished, gallery-wall look, pick up a frame that comes with a mat — that extra paper border inside the frame adds a lovely finishing touch.
Step 5: Hang and Enjoy
That’s truly all there is to it. Slide the print into the frame, hang it on the wall, and step back. A couple of dollars in supplies and about ten minutes of your morning, and your home has a completely fresh look. No shipping wait, no overpriced art store markup — just instant, beautiful wall art that feels like it belongs there.
A Few Questions I Hear Often
What if my printer cuts off the edges of the print?
This almost always comes down to the scaling setting. Open your printer dialog and make sure the page size option is set to “Actual Size” or 100%, not “Fit to Page.” If it’s still happening, look in your printer’s settings for a “borderless printing” option — that can help with edge-to-edge prints.
Can I take my file to a print shop instead?
Absolutely. Walgreens, FedEx Office, Staples, and Costco all print digital files for a small fee — usually under $2 for an 8×10. Just save your file to a USB drive or email it to yourself and take it in. This is a great option if you want a really large print or you don’t have a printer at home.
Can I resize the file?
Yes, you can scale a file down — for example, printing an 8×10 design at 5×7. High-resolution files handle that beautifully. What you can’t do is scale up beyond the original size without losing quality. If a file is sized for 8×10, printing it at 16×20 will look pixelated, so work within the original dimensions.
Can I print the same file more than once?
Yes! That’s honestly one of my favorite things about digital downloads. You can print as many copies as you need for your own personal use — one for the living room, one for a guest bedroom, one as a quick gift. The file is yours to keep and reprint whenever you like.
